Three poses to experience peace and serenity

There is no better feeling than peace and serenity. Lying motionless and letting go of any thoughts, fears and concerns is pure bliss.

Yoga has become a crucial part of my life. It provides my mind and body with benefits no gym membership has ever given me. It has made my body stronger and releases the tension of my muscles. I can concentrate on each movement and breath I take. Yoga is my therapy.

Don’t get me wrong; I wouldn’t consider myself a professional. However, for the past few years I have dedicated at least one hour a week to yoga. I have enjoyed learning about how different positions affect certain groups of muscles and organs in the body.

If you are afraid to try yoga, I am here to ease your mind. Remember, everyone starts somewhere.

Here are three beginner yoga positions that have multiple health benefits:

Child’s Pose (Balasana)

  • Stretches the thighs, hips and ankles
  • Relieves back and neck pain
  • Alleviates anxiety and stress

Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)

  • Boosts circulation
  • Tones legs and abdomen
  • Relieves stiffness in the shoulders

Marichi's Twist (Marichiyasana 3)

  • Squeezes abdominal organs to stimulate digestion
  • Opens the breathing passage
  • Stretches the spine and back muscles

I challenge you to try these poses at home. All you need is a yoga mat and plenty of water to hydrate afterwards. My favourite mat is from Lululemon. The quality is great!
